How to Find and Delete Your Shared AI Chat Links (ChatGPT, Claude, Gemini)

Share links keep working until you remove them — here's where each platform hides the list, and how to clear it.

When you share a chat from ChatGPT, Claude, or Gemini, the assistant creates a link to a copy of your conversation. Anyone who has that link can open it, and it keeps working until you remove it. Most people create a link, send it, and forget it exists. My other guides, including how to move a long chat to another assistant, tell you to remove the link when you're done. This guide shows how, on each platform.

Why old share links are worth cleaning up

A share link is not a private document. It's a public page that happens to have a long, hard-to-guess address. A few things are worth knowing:

  • Anyone with the link can read it. On a personal ChatGPT account, OpenAI says links are available to anyone who has them, and you can't restrict them to specific people.
  • There's no automatic expiry on ChatGPT. OpenAI says shared links don't have a configurable expiration date and tells you to delete a link when access is no longer needed.
  • "Not meant to be indexed" isn't "private." OpenAI notes that shared pages aren't intended for search-engine indexing, but that this doesn't make a link private, since anyone who can open it can forward it. Anthropic marks shared pages "noindex" too, but its own guidance says to treat a public link as public: if the link gets posted anywhere, anyone can open it, and copies saved by archives aren't covered by that instruction.
  • Chats often contain more than you remember. Names, project details, code, and personal information typed into a conversation can all be visible to whoever opens the link.

So the safest habit is to treat every share link as temporary: create it, use it, and delete it.

ChatGPT

To see and delete your shared links on the web:

  1. Open Settings in ChatGPT.
  2. Select Data controls.
  3. Next to Shared links, select Manage.
  4. To remove one link, select Delete shared link next to it.
  5. To remove everything, open More actions and select Delete all shared links.

Good to know:

  • Deleting a shared link stops future access to that link. It doesn't delete the original conversation, and it doesn't remove a copy someone else already saved.
  • Deleting the conversation itself also removes its shared link.
  • In ChatGPT Business, Enterprise, and Edu workspaces, links can be opened only by members of that workspace.

Claude

To find your shared chats on the web:

  1. Open Settings and go to Privacy.
  2. Next to Shared chats, click Manage to see the list of chats you've shared.
  3. Unshare any chat you no longer want public.

To unshare from the chat itself, open the Share menu, click the visibility dropdown, and change the chat from Public to Private. That disables the direct link. If you shared a chat with specific people instead, use Turn off in the share dialog, and the link stops working for everyone right away.

Good to know:

  • A shared chat is a snapshot of the conversation at the moment you share it. Messages sent afterward stay private unless you use Update shared chat, which replaces the snapshot with the current one.
  • Files you attached to a chat aren't included in the shared snapshot.
  • On Team and Enterprise plans, chats can be shared only with members of the same organization, not publicly — public links aren't available on those plans.
  • If you can't find the share controls in the mobile app, use claude.ai in a browser. Sharing is managed on the web.

Gemini

On a computer:

  1. Go to gemini.google.com.
  2. At the bottom of the menu, click Settings & help.
  3. Open Your public links.
  4. Next to the link you want to remove, click Delete public link. To remove all of them, click Delete all links.

Good to know:

  • Anyone who tries to open a deleted link sees a message that the chat no longer exists.
  • Deleting a public link doesn't delete the chat from your Gemini Apps activity.
  • Links live only as long as the chat. Google says a public link exists as long as the chat is saved in your Gemini Apps activity — if you delete the chat (or any part of it), its public links are deleted too. After deleting a chat, check the Your public links list to be sure.
  • With a work or school account, your administrator controls whether public links are allowed. Links created before sharing was turned off stay accessible until they're deleted.

What deleting a link doesn't undo

Removing a link closes the door, not the whole building. It stops new visitors from opening the page. It doesn't delete the original chat in your account, and it can't take back a copy someone already saved or imported. If a search engine has already stored a copy of the page, it may take time to disappear from results — search engines drop dead pages on their own recrawl schedule, and Google has a Remove outdated content tool to speed that up. That's another reason to delete links promptly instead of leaving them up.

A simple habit

  • Before you share, read through the conversation and remove anything private. If something sensitive is in there, don't share it.
  • After you've used the link, delete it. If you use ChatGPT Extractor, the link only has to be live for the few seconds the extraction takes. Create it, paste it into the tool, copy your text, then delete the link.
  • Once a month, open the lists above and clear anything you've forgotten about.

Frequently asked questions

Do share links expire on their own? OpenAI says ChatGPT links have no configurable expiration. Don't rely on any platform to remove links for you. Delete them yourself.

Does deleting a shared link delete my chat? No. On ChatGPT and Gemini, deleting the link leaves your original conversation in your account.

Will deleting the link remove it from Google search results? It stops the page from loading, so people who click it get nothing. Search engines can take a while to update, so a stale result may linger for some time. The platforms say their share pages aren't meant to be indexed, but a link you posted somewhere public can still be found.

Can I do this from my phone? The steps above are for the websites. If you can't find an option in an app, open the platform's website in a browser.

Keeping a chat you still need? Get it out as clean Markdown first — then delete the link.
